Just overheard someone say their air fryer caught fire from too much oil buildup

I was at a friend's BBQ last night and his neighbor mentioned how his wife's air fryer flared up because they never cleaned the heating element. Now I'm paranoid about how often I've been skipping the deep clean. How often do you guys really scrub yours out?

Had a buddy who swore he cleaned his air fryer every few weeks, then one day smoke started pouring out while he was making wings. He pulled the basket and there was this thick black crust all around the heating coil, like it had been baking on for months. Now I just give mine a quick wipe after each use and do a full scrub once a month, way easier than dealing with a fire.

Oh man, that's the stuff of nightmares right there. I'm the guy who sets the fire alarm off every time I toast a bagel too dark, so I'd probably just let the whole place burn down and blame it on the air fryer. My cleaning routine is basically "peek inside, see a crumb, close the door and pretend it's fine." I had this one time where I found a dried up french fry from three months ago stuck under the basket, like a fossil. So yeah, I'm definitely learning from your buddy's mistake before I end up roasting my apartment instead of my wings.
