Appreciation post: my neighbor in Phoenix showed me a trick with frozen fries

I was over there for a game last month and watched him toss a bag of frozen fries into his air fryer without any oil. They came out crispier than when I use oil in my oven. Has anyone else found you can skip the oil for certain frozen foods?

Tried it with frozen onion rings last week and they were perfect. The air fryer just gets things so crispy on its own.

My air fryer has been running non-stop since I got it last Christmas. I burned so many fries trying to use oil at first, it was a crime scene in my kitchen. Totally get what @nancy929 means about the onion rings, that built-in crisp factor is a game changer. I'm still learning what else works without oil, but it feels like a small victory every time I don't set off the smoke alarm.
