OF ROCHESTER, NY DETAILS:
The Town of Rochester consists of the hamlets of Accord, Alligerville, Cherrytown, The Clove, Fantine Kill, Granite, Kerhonkson, Kyserike, Leibhardt, Mettacahonts, Mill Hook, Mombaccus, Palentown, Pataukunk, Pine Bush, Potterville, Rochester Center, Rock Hill, St. Josen, Tabasco, Whitfield and Yeagerville.
The town is part of the Rondout Valley and is set between the parallel mountain ranges of the Shawangunks on the east and the Catskills on the west.
The Shawangunk Mountain Range is a most unique geologic feature within the town offering the striking features of a series of five “sky lakes” near the mountain ridge: Maratanza, Mud Pond, Awosting, Minnewaska and Mohonk--all possessing extremely clear water.
Significant portions of the township are protected through a network of private and public stewardships. Rochester lies within the Catskill Park which also includes the Catskill Forest Preserve and Minnewaska State Park. Together they encompass a majority of the Shawangunk ridge, both in Rochester and in adjoining townships.
Many outdoor activities are available amdist the natural beauty and splendor of this area.
Initially called Mombaccus by the Dutch who settled in the area in 1672, Rochester was incorporated in 1703 and organized as a town in 1788.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the basic activity of most families was farming. However, many farmers had additional occupations. The town's early industry derived from its unique geological features, primarily limestone and sandstone (bluestone) quarrying. For the greater part of the 20th century, the summer resort industry of accommodations in bungalow colonies, camps and hotels played an important role in the economic life of Rochester.
