What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters ("shareholders" or "members") which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Each season the shareholders provide the money (and sometimes other resources) needed for the farm to operate by purchasing a " share" of the season's harvest. CSA has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. CSA fosters responsible relationships between the grower, the consumer, the food, and the land on which the food is grown.

If shares are no longer available in this year, prospective shareholders may be able to sign up on the waiting list for the following year.

Evolutionary Organics CSA Farm

Runs end of May to November. Since 2003, Kira Kinney has used Evolutionary Organics to make Certified Naturally Grown produce. She farms a little over 20 acres of many heirloom vegetables, baby greens, herbs and pasture raised eggs.

CSA distributions generally run 22 weeks from the first week in June through October with make-up and additional optional weeks in early November. The CSA distributes fruits and vegetables only. We also have a great U-Pick selection that includes flowers, berries, peppers, and beans. Last year we offered eggs and cheese from local farms, but those would be bought separately as we've done previously with bread.

The season runs for 24 weeks, from late May to early November. Distribution is at the farm. The cost of the share is determined by the size of the member's household. Pick up on farm in Gardiner or at the Hudson Highlands Land Trust office in Garrison. June to the last week of October, plus a Thanksgiving share.

Winter Sun Farms

Runs December – April. Winter Sun Farms partners with local farms to supply great tasting frozen and preserved vegetables and fruit all winter long, distributed through membership in a winter CSA. Members pay in advance for "winter shares" which means they will receive monthly shares of produce throughout the winter. Register online during summer 2015 or contact directly by phone or email.

Poughkeepsie Mobile Farmers Market.

Dutchess Outreach, Inc. has established the Poughkeepsie Mobile Market beginning in June, 2015.  Operating for 22 weeks per year, the mobile market will bring food from local farms in the Hudson River Valley to four inner city sites where the population has little or no access to stores with fresh produce. Using a purposely modified truck and trailer, we will move produce to where people live.
